What is distance learning, and when would we need this option for instruction?
Distance learning involves teacher-prepared and online program lessons that students would complete away from their regular physical classrooms.  While we prefer face-to-face teaching and learning methods for the strength of professional instruction and opportunity for students to seek timely, one-on-one assistance, there are circumstances when distance learning is needed so seamless instruction can continue.  Learning must continue, even when we can't all be in our usual buildings due to safety concerns and illness.  Therefore, Brantley County educators have built an online alternative to REACH students who must remain in the home.  This method of instruction allows students and their families to have access to Georgia's standards-based curriculum and to share in the role of daily teaching and learning in the home.

Brantley County Distance Learning Plan and Expectations for Educators, Learners, and Families
  • Format:  Certified educators will provide instruction and assignments via the Google Classroom platform.  This platform will include learning targets based on Georgia standards and lessons ranging from 30 minutes to 1 1/2 hours for each class offered.  Our online template for lessons will include instructional videos, supplemental learning aids, online "office hours" for students to receive live instruction and/or ask questions about learning, interactive practice, and assessments.
  • Educator Expectations:
    • Educators will create daily lessons (following the system Google Classroom template) including 5-10 minute video instruction with agenda talking points and the target standard(s), interactive practice opportunities, supplemental study guides/notes (as necessary), and online assessments of learning (as necessary).  Assignments and assessments should be interactive but print-friendly as much as possible.
    • Educators will schedule live "office hours" at least two times a week in Google Meet to answer questions for the class and will also be able to assist students/parents via school email daily when needed (note: a specific time for answering mail and for live "office hours" should be listed in the Google Classroom Introduction Module -- minimum of 30 minute per session)
    • Lessons will be structured to take a student between 30 minutes and 1 1/2 hours to complete per class.
    • Teachers will remain consistent in methods of posting assignments (including clear directions) and communication using Google Classroom as the platform.
    • Teachers will remain consistent in giving timely feedback and in posting grades for weekly Google Classroom assignments.  Communicate the weekly due date for feedback/grades (designated by administration) to students/parents in the Introduction Module of Google Classroom.  Number of grades follows district policy.
    • Teachers will provide social/emotional and academic "check in" opportunities each week and will attempt to contact students if they do not see activity or hear from the student during office hours or via email/other communication platforms.
  • Student/Family Expectations:
    • Try to provide encouragement, reliable devices that support the Google Classroom online platform (please see the school for ideas if you are struggling to provide Internet/device), and a distraction free environment where your child can listen, work, and learn.
    • Assist your child in logging on and create a daily/weekly goal schedule for completing work assigned as well as for taking advantage of the online "office hour" and other opportunities for help.
    • Your child will be responsible for turning in work on time, as outlined in the Google Classroom platform; however, you may contact your child's teacher in advance of the deadline if your child is having issues understanding or completing work.
    • Make sure to communicate with the teacher (via Google Classroom - email)  if your child needs additional instruction or help; note: teachers will not be available 24 hours a day.  Teachers will have specific times noted for answering emails daily and for weekly "office hours" to help in a virtual chat/tutoring session with other students.
    • "Check in" with teachers when they provide opportunities for you and your child to communicate emotional and academic status.
